Bringing back the Start button in Windows 8

If the lack of a start button is keeping you from upgrading to Windows 8, then you’re in luck. Many software and app developers have released different apps allowing you to bring back the traditional Start Menu Button in Windows 8. Some of these are great but some are to be completely avoided. So today, I’ll tell you about the best Start Menu bringing back programs for Windows 8:

Win8StartButton

Pros: Offers a clean and sleek layout, the search bar is always in focus so that you can open any program quickly

Cons: Some of the options are in German (Update: The latest version of Win8StartButton now supports multi-language. Thanks Daniel Bocksteger for the info)

Win8StartButton ūüôā

Win8StartButton is one of the best Start button for Windows. It offers a clean looking layout that looks a little bit like the default start menu of Windows 8. One of the best things about this Start Menu is that whenever you open it, the Search bar is always in focus so you can quickly type in a few letters to open any software program quickly. Win8StartButton is free, which is really awesome.

I liked this Start menu a lot, but one of the negative things that stopped me from using it is that some of the options are written in German. (Update: The latest version of Win8StartButton now supports multi-language. Thanks Daniel Bocksteger for the info)

Start8

Pros: It offers the same start menu experience that was on Windows 7. It offers a polished and clean looking layout for your start menu.

Cons: It’s not free, has a price tag of $5.oo, but offers a 30 day trial

“Start8 is by far the most excellent Start Menu alternative for Windows 8”

For me, Start8 is by far the most excellent Start Menu alternative for Windows 8. It looks beautiful, simply beautiful. It offers great customization. You can change the Start menu behaviors, font, icon sizes, color, style, and which shortcuts you want Start8 to display. Documents, Music, and Pictures folders are back to where they belong (pre-Windows 8) and so is the search bar. You can also set your computer to boot directly to the desktop.

The only con for Start8 is that it’s not free, it has a price tag of $5. However, you can download and use a 30-day trial before buying it.

Start is Back

Pros: You can customize the icon of the start menu (including the Windows orb), you can also completely disable the menus that appear when you hover your mice in one of the corners of your desktop.

Cons: Start is Back is still in beta, and it will not remain free once it is out of beta

It is still in beta, but it is awesome.

Start is Back is a windows start button that is currently still in beta. It looks really good. You can customize the layout of the Start button and the Windows orb. You can also choose to boot directly onto the desktop instead of the default start menu. Start is Back also lets you disable the menus that appear when you hover your mouse onto one of the corners of your Windows 8 desktop.

Start is Back is currently free as it is in beta, but in will change once it out of beta.

So here are my top three Start buttons for Windows 8. Tell me below in the comments if I have left any important one out. Are you using a Start button, or the default Start Menu is Windows 8? Tell us on our Facebook page.
